My fervor for all things Christmas is amplified by being a Jew. Christmas is my forbidden fruit. The holiday holds a red & green, pine needle & peppermint-scented allure. I can't keep myself away from it. When hanukkah rolls around, I have to force myself to stifle reveries of stuffed stockings and Santa Claus back into a dark corner of my mind, one where Sugar Plum Fairies dance freely and Menorahs aren’t a thing. These cookies are what I fantasize I would leave for Santa if I celebrated the holiday. Flavored with ginger, cloves, nutmeg, and a little defiance, they scream Christmas, both appearance and taste-wise. I'm submitting this recipe as part of Drop's Holiday Recipe Swap!

Step preview

  1. Add all purpose flour, baking soda, kosher salt, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves and nutmeg to a clean medium bowl
  2. Whisk until combined then set aside
  3. Add unsalted butter, white sugar and light brown sugar to a clean stand mixer bowl
  4. Beat until smooth - approx 5 min
  5. Add egg, molasses and vanilla extract to the stand mixer bowl
  6. Transfer dry ingredients to stand mixer bowl
  7. Beat until smooth
  8. Cover with plastic wrap
  9. Chill in fridge - approx 1 hr
  10. Add white sugar to a clean small bowl
  11. Line a clean baking sheet with parchment paper
  12. Transfer content of stand mixer bowl to large mixing bowl
  13. Roll into balls
  14. Dip balls into sugar mixture
  15. Transfer content of large mixing bowl to baking sheet
  16. Bake - approx 10 min, 175°C
  17. Let cool onto cooling rack
  18. Add white chocolate chips to a clean medium bowl
  19. Melt - approx 1 min
  20. Stir until smooth
  21. Dip content of baking sheet into chocolate mixture then set aside
  22. Let rest on surface until set
  23. Add food coloring to the chocolate mixture
  24. Decorate with piping bag
