The flavours of these beans are bold and vibrant. The texture is not gritty and mushy like the canned versions, and portion control is much easier using homemade. Yes, it takes more planning and a bit more time, but it is well worth the effort. If you use a slow cooker, most of the time is passive without the need to watch the pot. It can’t get better than that. Note: If using canned navy beans, use 3-4 cans well rinsed and drained.

Step preview

  1. Add molasses, tomato sauce, brown sugar, dry mustard, salt and black pepper to a clean saucepan
  2. Heat slowly until mixture comes together - medium heat
  3. Add liquid smoke to the sauce
  4. Add canned navy beans to a clean large mixing bowl
  5. Transfer in slow cooker
  6. Add bacon to the beans
  7. Transfer sauce to beans
  8. Cover with water
  9. Cook - approx 4 hr
  10. Cook - approx 3 hr
  11. Serve
