Step preview

  1. Add lean ground beef to a clean large mixing bowl
  2. Mix water and baking soda into a clean small glass bowl
  3. Transfer content of small glass bowl to large mixing bowl
  4. Mix until combined then set aside
  5. Add oil to a clean frying pan
  6. Heat in frying pan until shimmering - medium-high heat
  7. Add onion, baking soda and salt to the frying pan
  8. Sauté until golden brown - medium-high heat
  9. Stir in garlic to the frying pan
  10. Cook until fragrant - approx 30 sec
  11. Add paprika to the frying pan
  12. Cook until fragrant - approx 30 sec
  13. Add red pepper flakes, salt, brown sugar and tomato paste to the frying pan
  14. Cook until cooked through - approx 4 min, medium-high heat
  15. Transfer content of large mixing bowl to frying pan
  16. Reduce heat to medium and cook until the beef is no longer pink, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon.
  17. Mash with potato masher until the meat reaches a uniform desired consistency.
  18. Add ketchup, worcestershire sauce and red wine vinegar to the frying pan
  19. Stir in until combined
  20. Add cornstarch and water to the small glass bowl
  21. Stir until combined
  22. Transfer content of small glass bowl to frying pan
  23. Stir in until combined
  24. Heat until thickened and silky
  25. Season to taste and serve
