Step preview

  1. Add butter and olive oil to a clean large cast iron skillet
  2. Heat
  3. Add onion and fry until softened - approx 15 min, medium heat
  4. Stir in superfine sugar to the large cast iron skillet
  5. Fry - 10 min
  6. Stir in all purpose flour to the large cast iron skillet
  7. Add beer, beef stock, bay leaves, worcestershire sauce and salt & pepper
  8. Stir while bringing to a boil
  9. Transfer content of large cast iron skillet to slow cooker bowl and cover
  10. Cook in slow cooker until soft - approx 5 hr, low heat
  11. Add baguette to the large cast iron skillet
  12. Toast then set aside
  13. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese
  14. Drizzle with worcestershire sauce
  15. Broil until the cheese is bubbling
  16. Ladle the soup into shallow bowls and float the croutes on top
